Off to Market

12 Mar

We went to the grocery store again today. We end up  going every couple of days since we’re mostly eating 3 meals at day at home and we have  a teeny tiny fridge. Coles is the giant super market where we shop. It’s similar to any US store. There are some foods I haven’t found, like artichokes or peeps, and they have a LOT of canned meats. All sorts. If anyone wants hotdogs or meat pies in a can, just let me know and I’ll mail you some. Other foods are called different things here.

US Name                       Aussie Name

bell pepper                   capsicum

cantaloupe                    rock melon

arugula                          rocket

I’m sure there are thousands of other variances, but mostly I can figure out what food is. Rob needs corn starch for a school project and they only had corn flour. Turns out it’s the same thing.

Reward* for the best or most accurate translation:

“I was going to make Rob a dingo’s breakfast, but he decided to have a cuppa and bum nuts instead.”

“A yawn and a piss and no breakfast, then tea and eggs”

Hmmm…. Dingo’s breakfast: pile of sand; cuppa: tea/coffee; and bum nuts: beans! (obvioulsy).

Close. Bums nuts are eggs. Lovely, right?

Now I have to use that phrase from now on. Bum nuts. Hehehe. Bum nuts. Bum nuts!

Please send the canned hot dogs (known in Austrailia as “Moby Dicks”) air mail.
