The Answer: About 22,000,000

29 Aug

Australia is considered to have one of the highest degrees of urban concentration in the world.  Despite the urban concentration, Australia has an average of three people per square kilometre, making it one of the lowest population densities in the world.

It has fewer people than California and Texas, but more than the other states (individually, not combined). It would be like taking the entire population of Texas and spreading it over the continental United States.

It’s called the Never Never for a reason

My guess was just that. But since Australia is mostly inhabitable, 22M seemed about right. Still, that’s less than all the folks in Los Angeles. How big is LA?

According to google (and not actually clicking on any links), Los Angeles County has 10,000,000. Half the population of Australia.

Then I was right. Less people live in Australia then in LA. It’s also true that less people live on Mars than Australia, or Fresno, or Fiji, or San Diego, or Guam, or Terra del Fuego, or Paris, or Tehran, or Leningrad, or Compton, or Beverly Hills, or Iceland, or Rolling Hills. But who’s counting?
