The Answer: 3

12 Sep

Australia borders the Indian Ocean, Pacific Ocean and the Southern Ocean. Also, there is the Timor Sea, the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf, Arafura Sea, the Gulf of Carpentaria, the Torres Strait, the Coral Sea, the Tasman Sea, the Bass Strait and the Great Australian Bight. It is one gigantic island, after all.

So, can someone tell me what the difference is between a “Sea” and an “Ocean”?

An ocean is big, there are only 5 (Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, Arctic, and Southern). They cover 70% of earth. A sea is bounded by land. If you made maps for a living in the 1700’s you have naming rights: Japan Sea – Bruce Japan, Sea of Cortez – Nigel Cortez, etc.
